In our first milestone, we were introduced to the Theory of Evolution. Given a set of guiding questions, we had to make a concept map about our knowledge of the Animal Kingdom. We looked at different species and analyzed their similarities and differences.
We looked deeper into the different ways natural selection takes place. To show our understanding, we showed the 4 different ways (overproduction, variation, competition, and selection) of natural selection in 4 different ways. We used stories, stop motion, posters, comics, and any other method we were comfortable with to demonstrate our knowledge.
In our third milestone, we were introduced to the world of genetics and how DNA defines us. We looked at the different roles of chromosomes, alleles, and how to use Punnett Squares to solve genetic trait outcomes. Lastly, we learned about mutations and how they could lead to the birth of an entirely new species! We showed our knowledge of mutations through a presentation that was presented to a panel of judges.
Human impact plays a large role in affecting different animals, even leading some to extinction. In this final milestone, we looked at some ways human impact has hurt the Animal Kingdom. We learned about deforestation in the Amazon Rainforest, as well as the effects of plastic waste on our oceans and its inhabitants. As a final project, we came together as a class to help raise awareness of the effects of human impact on our oceans by designing our own jellyfish and plastic sign! We also created a video that shows the devastation plastic waste has had on our environment.
