Our project for this term entailed learning about the Solar System and discovering whether there is ‘life on other planets’. It involved learning about the planets, sun and moon. It took the form of making a book followed by making a model of a Solar System. This was sparked by a question asked by the students: “Ms Sophia, are there people on the moon and other planets?
Part 1 – The Book – The Solar Sytem
Literacy : Vocabulary, writing names of planets for book
Math : Patterns, Size, Shape
Learning : Characteristics of planets
– color
– size and shape
– structure/surface
– position
– neighbors
– similarities and differences
Part 2 – The model of The Solar System
In this project on building their own solar system, children got to work some of those gross motor, comparative and numeracy skills as they built, cut, mold and painted/colored the planets of various sizes and colors in our solar system. Students would discover the position and relationship of objects in space, display their understanding of why there is no life on other planets and their responsibility to take care of the earth.
As part of their experience, students were asked to do a video of their product thereby incorporating their skills with technology. This would be their presentation of their product.
Added learning – Learning a song -“Earth we’re in it together”
Instill in students an awareness of their responsibility for the care of their environment and that they can play a role in the care of the Earth.
Essential Questions
1. Which planet do you live on?
2. Do people live on other planets?

“I want to be an Astronaut”
Victor, you reminded me of the importance of the content of lessons and why I became a teacher – ‘to make a difference in a child’s life’- that there is no limit to what we can achieve… Dreams can become reality if we work toward it..Go Go Go!!
